Coir 700 Channel Stabilization
A Natural-Fiber Solution for an Environmentally Sensitive Site
…it starts with the seed!
Environmentally sensitive erosion control work requires more than simply covering the soil. It requires the right combination of stabilization material, seed mix, and anchoring system to protect the site while vegetation establishes.
On a MnDOT project along the Highway 52/I-90 corridor, Evergreen Companies installed a natural coir turf reinforcement system designed to stabilize a newly shaped channel while supporting long-term vegetation establishment. Ramy Turf Products supplied the seed, Coir 700 turf reinforcement mat, and Falcon helical pins needed to help the project move forward with confidence.

The Challenge
Stabilizing a Sensitive Channel Without Overcomplicating the Site
The project called for stabilization of a newly constructed channel along a MnDOT highway corridor. Because the site was located near environmentally sensitive areas, the erosion control approach needed to support both immediate soil protection and long-term vegetation establishment.
In applications like this, the wrong product choice can create problems after installation. Materials must stay in place, maintain soil contact, allow vegetation to grow through the system, and perform under rainfall and runoff conditions.
The goal was not just to protect the channel on installation day. The goal was to create the conditions for vegetation to take over as the long-term stabilization system.
The Ramy Approach
A Natural Coir System Built Around Establishment
Ramy supported Evergreen Companies with a product combination selected for the site conditions, MnDOT requirements, and long-term establishment goals. The approach paired a natural coir turf reinforcement mat with MnDOT seed mixes and a secure anchoring system.
Coir 700 Turf Reinforcement Mat
Coir 700 was used to provide channel protection while allowing vegetation to establish through the mat structure. Coir products are made from coconut fiber and are often selected for environmentally sensitive areas where natural materials are preferred.
MnDOT Seed Mixes
The channel was seeded with MnDOT 35-241, blended with 10 lbs/acre of 25-141. The seed selection supported the larger goal of getting vegetation established as the long-term erosion control mechanism.
8-Inch Falcon Helical Pins
The matting system was secured with 8-inch Falcon helical pins to help maintain soil contact and keep the system properly anchored during the critical establishment period.
Environmentally sensitive projects often require more than erosion control. They require a system that protects the site today while helping vegetation establish for the long term.

The Outcome
Immediate Channel Protection with Long-Term Vegetation in Mind
The completed installation provided immediate erosion protection across the newly prepared channel while supporting the long-term establishment of vegetation. By combining natural coir reinforcement, MnDOT-approved seed mixes, and proper anchoring, Evergreen Companies installed a system designed to protect the channel and the surrounding environment.
Natural-Fiber Protection
The Coir 700 mat provided surface protection using coconut fiber, a natural material commonly selected for environmentally sensitive erosion control applications.
Vegetation Establishment
The MnDOT 35-241 seed mix, blended with 25-141, helped support the long-term goal of stabilizing the channel through established vegetation.
Secure Installation
8-inch Falcon helical pins helped anchor the matting system and maintain the soil contact needed for performance during the establishment window.
Contractor Support
Ramy supplied the right combination of erosion control material, seed, and anchoring products to support Evergreen Companies in the field.
Projects like this show why erosion control and vegetation establishment need to be considered together. The mat protects the soil. The seed creates the long-term solution. The right anchoring helps hold the system in place while that process happens.
